Who Is Medicaid For?

Who Is Medicaid ForMedicaid is a healthcare and assistance program jointly funded by states and the federal government. It is designed for people who meet certain criteria such as low income, but poverty alone does not automatically make a person eligible. If you would like information about how to apply for Medicaid, or have been turned down, a Conroe estate attorney may be able to help.

Eligibility for Medicaid

Many people are confused about Medicaid, and believe it is synonymous with Medicare. The two are different programs, though both are governmentally sponsored and implemented. Medicare is an insurance designed specifically with seniors 65 and over and disabled individuals in mind. Medicaid, on the other hand, is an assistance program for those who meet certain criteria, such as having little or no income. It is possible to qualify for both programs, and many seniors do.

The coverage for Medicaid varies with the needs of those who are covered. Those who are eligible include:

  • Seniors
  • The blind and disabled
  • Low or no-income families
  • Infants and children
  • Some Medicare recipients

You are also automatically eligible if you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Work First Family Assistance, or Adult Care Home Assistance.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act expanded the funding and eligibility for Medicaid In essence, anyone with an income that is no more than 133% of the poverty line as defined for a particular year is eligible. One does not need to have dependent children to qualify. Not all states have chosen to participate in the expansion of Medicaid, however, for this means significant costs that not all states are able to manage.

What to Do to Qualify

In order to qualify for Medicaid, an applicant must show the following:

  • That you are a U.S. citizen or are of eligible legal immigrant status
  • That you are the resident of Texas
  • That you either have a Social Security number or have applied for one
