How often should I update my will?

Bryan-College Station, Texas estate planning attorney

Oftentimes, significant life events motivate us to see an attorney to have a will drafted. Getting married, the birth of a child or the unexpected loss of a friend or loved one are some of those significant events. But once you get the will and file it away, do you ever think about it? It's important to periodically review your estate plan to be sure your will meets your current estate goals and objectives.

While there is no rule detailing how often you should review your estate plan, the following life-changing should trigger a review:

  • Marriage or divorce
  • Adding children to your family, either by birth, adoption or marriage
  • Significant changes in the value of your assets
  • Beneficiary changes
  • Retirement
  • Changes in the tax code affecting estates and inheritances

To be sure your loved ones receive the inheritance you want them to have, contact an experienced Bryan-College Station, Texas estate planning attorney. Likewise, if you are wondering whether your will is valid, schedule a meeting so we can discuss the facts of your situation and recommend your next steps.
