Dating during Divorce

Dating as a Complicating Factor

Dating during DivorceDivorce is generally a very complicated matter. Couples who have been married for years usually have merged virtually all aspects of their lives—bank accounts, credit cards, the family home, friends, future plans—to name just a few. Also, inter-familial relationships develop that may or may not last after the divorce. The division of assets is usually one of the most contentious aspects of a divorce.

With all these issues weighing upon a person, dating can complicate matters even more. You can become emotionally confused. Moreover, if you begin dating someone with the hope of a new, long-term relationship, this is probably not a good time to do so, for the weight of the divorce can put a substantial strain on the new, budding relationship.

Dating and the Children

Your most important consideration during a divorce should be the welfare of your children. This is certainly the prime focus of Texas family courts. Children are the true victims in a divorce. They often are frightened, uncertain of the future. Most children don't want their parents to divorce. Unless an abusive individual is involved, children generally thrive on having both parents in their lives, and they may be holding out hope that the marriage will somehow magically be salvaged.

If you begin to date someone new during this time, your children are likely to become confused and even more frightened. They may grow to feel a great deal of enmity toward this new “intruder,” and may also blame you for not trying to save the family. While ultimately it is up to you to decide whether or not to pursue dating during a divorce, it is essential that you seriously consider how this will affect your children, both short- and long-term.
